Using Embracing and Appreciation as a Relationship-building Tool

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The fact that you own (or run) a successful business means that you could not have gotten to that level of success without other people. There is no doubt that your hard work, persistence, and perseverance were heavy contributors but other people also deserve your recognition and appreciation as well.

Appreciation should be expressed appropriately

There is a right way and a wrong way to express appreciation. Undoubtedly, appreciation is necessary because it strengthens your relationship with the other person and because it is the right thing to do. However, that doesn’t mean that you should express your appreciation for every little thing, necessarily. Saying thank you for everything will dilute the appreciation that you express at the appropriate times.

On your journey to building relationships, the way will be peppered with lots of important things including loyalty, reliability, and knowledge. If the relationship is what it should be, that means that you both go above and beyond for each other at some point (most likely, many times). Those are the moments that deserve appreciation and recognition. Of course, there are other qualities that are assumed. Of course, if those don’t exist, it will be noticed. However, they are not extraordinary. They are simply necessary.

A thank you for a job well done goes a long way

The reason that you do what you do is because you have a talent for that particular thing. Even though it is totally expected that you will do that well and achieve results, it still makes you feel really good to receive recognition and appreciation for how well you have done the job. Human beings need praise and they need to feel that their contributions are valued. The other important emotion that human beings all crave is validation.

When someone expresses appreciation for a job well done, it makes you feel validated. It also brings home the point that what you are doing is worthwhile and that you are where you need to be. The fact is that you are constantly working hard to achieve your goals. You will not achieve those goals every day but you certainly will get there eventually. Basically, you will accomplish two wonderful things in the process. You will achieve the goal that you have set out to accomplish and you will be recognized and appreciated for all of your hard work. Even if you don’t always see the progress that you are making, it is still happening. Once you are at the end of the process, you can look back and you will see just how much you did accomplish.

How does the expression of appreciation come about?

Before you get to the point where someone else expresses appreciation and recognition for what you have accomplished, that person needs to take notice of what you are doing. Of course, that can be rather challenging considering that everyone is busy and they are focused on what they are trying to accomplish.

Considering how critical appreciation and recognition are to a successful organization, those people need to slow down and pay attention to what others around them are doing. The expressed appreciation will go a very long way to causing the other person to want to be even more productive and to work even harder.

Conclusion

You work really hard and you try to do the best job possible at all times. Even though you are self-motivated, it is important for other people to express their appreciation and to recognize that you are doing a good job and that you are making a solid contribution to the organization. Appreciation is an extremely effective motivator. It also generated positive energy in anyone who is present. Just remember to express appreciation appropriately. Human beings need to feel validated and appreciated. You are no different.
