Bringing Your Listening Skills to New Heights

Listening
Print Friendly, PDF & Email

In business (no matter which business it is), listening skills and communication are critical to the success of the business. Expressing yourself effectively is really important but being able to listen to the other person is just as important (if not more important).

Learning to clear your mind and focus

You may find yourself in a room with several other people or in a conversation with a small number of people. When you are no longer interacting with those people, you may walk away with little or no idea about what was said and what your takeaways are. That may seem strange but it is entirely possible and even common.

When you listen, you are not only hearing the words that the speaker is using. You are also capturing the meaning that is intended and, in many cases, turning it into some sort of positive action.

Make your best effort to engage other people

If you are true with the other person (or people), you will not only listen to what is being said but you will also be engaged with that other person and your interaction will be on a deeper level. Focus is really critical. The last thing that you want to do is to allow your brain to go somewhere (anywhere) else. There are two main reasons why you don’t want to let that happen. First of all, you won’t get anything out of the meaning, which defeats the purpose of your taking the time and making the effort to be there in the first place. Also, you will be putting your relationship with the other person in jeopardy. After having put in all of the time and effort to cultivate that relationship, why would you want to put it at risk?

Be as open-minded as possible

When you allow your mind to be clear and open, you will get a tremendous amount out of the interaction. You will be engaged and you will engage the other person. If you maintain a consistent level of engagement, you will do very well together. If you are open-minded, that means that you will also be open to new ideas and perspectives, which will enhance your business and your way of thinking. On the other hand, if you are not open-minded, you will not benefit from any interactions with which you are involved.

Solidify in your mind what the other person is trying to say

Before you arrive at your meeting with the other person (or several people), you may think that you know exactly what the other person wants to share with you. However, that may not exactly be the intention of the other person. He or she may actually have a goal of going in a different direction. That doesn’t mean that what the other person wants to say is any less valuable than what you were anticipating. That is exactly why you need to be open-minded and remain open-minded. It is definitely for your benefit and for the benefit of your brand/business. It is important to note that you will want to avoid not listening and listening selectively. Neither of those is helpful in that situation. Even if you think that you are not particularly interested in what the other person has to say, he or she may surprise you with what is actually presented.

Conclusion

Listening is an essential skill in business (and in life). It gives you the opportunity to absorb valuable information that you can then use in your business. Not only do you need to know how to listen because it will enable you to bring your business to the next level and become an even bigger success than you already were but you will also gain a tremendous amount on both professional and personal levels. Listening to the other person and, in turn, the other person listening to you will make your relationship solid and mutually beneficial. The happy news is that you can perfect your learning skills (or learn them from the beginning if that is your situation). The more you work on those skills, the better you will become at listening.
