Choosing Effective Twitter Calls-to-Action

Sometimes, it is difficult to come up with effective tweets. It is difficult enough to limit your tweets to the 140 character maximum, which is one of Twitter’s most difficult rules for writers. Your tweets need to pack a punch and they have to do it clearly and concisely.

Tremendous activity level on Twitter

At times, it seems as though Twitter is not as understood or as respected as the other popular social media channels (like LinkedIn and Facebook). However, as a business person, you possibly should be taking it more seriously than you have done up to now. Twitter actually has a great deal of potential to help bring your business to the next level of success. Twitter can help you to work your social media marketing strategy and to reach the right people at the right time.

An effective Inbound Marketing tool

When it comes to Inbound Marketing, (marketing that is the antithesis of traditional marketing, where you go after your customers. With Inbound Marketing, you get your customers to come to you and when they do, they are prequalified and prescreened. Half the work has already been done for you at this point.) using a call-to-action is an extremely part of the strategy. Without a call-to-action, you are leaving your prospective customers with absolutely no way to interact with you. All that they have is your content.

If they want to begin a relationship with you and your business (which is definitely in both of your best interest), how are they going to do that if they don’t have any idea of how to reach you? It is simple common sense. Of course, your ultimate goal is to eventually get those people with whom you are cultivating a relationship to buy what you are selling. It is important for you to understand that will only happen after they trust you, find you credible, and have tremendous confidence in the fact that you are an expert in your particular niche or industry. Your call-to-action serves as a method of enticement and your audience members will eventually want to be strongly tied to you and your business.

There are several different types of calls-to-action that you can use to attract your target audience.

Request that they download something that you are offering: If you have some sort of new offering, ask them to download whatever information you are trying to share with them. Remember, of course, to include a link that will take them to wherever you want them to go. In your call-to-action, it is important for you to make sure to tell people exactly what you want them to do, express clearly that they will receive some sort of reward (incentive) for clicking, be careful about how much you use hashtags to ensure that your users don’t get too overwhelmed, and give them a deadline by when you want them to do something in particular.

Ask your users to retweet your content: If your content has merit, which it definitely does, there is nothing wrong with your asking your users to retweet it. You will be surprised at how many users will be willing to retweet your content. People are usually accommodating if they believe in what you are saying. On the other hand, of course, if they don’t believe in what you are saying, no amount of coaxing will make any difference. It is important to remember not to use abbreviations in your call-to-action. If you are  asking for something, be clear and spell it out. Abbreviations are annoying and have the potential to be ambiguous. You should also express why you are asking for a retweet. It won’t hurt for you to express why you feel that the content is valuable. Make sure that you keep the language in your call-to-action clear and concise. It will be appreciated and it will achieve results.

Ask your users to follow you on Twitter: Sometimes, you get the best results simply by asking. It doesn’t seem possible but sometimes, people don’t really understand what you want or need them to do if you don’t spell it out. Once they clearly understand, in many instances, they will be more than happy to oblige. Another good trick is to emphasize (or highlight) the content that you want your users to notice and act upon. Make sure to offer them some sort of incentive.

Request a response: If you want your users to respond, make sure that you ask them to respond. It is all part of the interaction and many people will be willing to comply. There are many different ways to attract your users, including writing tweets that have an emotional element to them, keeping your language informal, and asking compelling questions and other interesting tidbits.

Conclusion

Your Twitter call to action is critically important to your business’s success. It is important to keep in mind that Twitter is a conversational social media channel and it should be treated in that way. It is essential that you leverage your calls-to-action to really make your business buzz. In this situation, it is your job to use your call-to-action to make your users feel that they are better off taking some action and interacting with you than doing nothing at all.

I love Twitter and this article you shared Jonathan has some great tips on call to action. We seem to forget how effective Twitter can be when you have a specific purpose in mind to share or add value to your audience.

In my work, you have to call folks to action via insight and can often accomplish this through calling into question (lightly) some of their own insecurities/worries as a leader or executive. Personally, the most effective tweet I have had to date was “Stop being cheap and invest in your people,” with a link to an article about space design and ergonomic investments. Lots of clicks and positive reaction.

Thanks for the great article. Asking for what we want directly is refreshing and useful, so long as its not overdone.

Great points, thanks for the post. Sometimes its great to just ask for what we want, and this includes Twitter. Requesting followers and retweeting is fine, so long its done occasionally.
