As a brand-new business owner, you have a limited budget. However, there are many Internet Marketing steps that you can take with minimal effort that will help you to lay the foundation for your startup business.

Choose a name: Choose a name that really works for you. The name should be unambiguous, memorable, and simple. The domain should be straight forward and available. Available means that you can register it right away.

Build a website: Your goal should be to have enough content on your website to allow the search engines to recognize it. Make sure to use a good content management system (CMS). The features and structure of the CMS are going to be important to you a little later on.

Build links on your website: You need other sites to link to your website. Building links is one of the most important factors in achieving high rankings in the search engines. Your main objective is to get Google to start indexing your website. Increasing the amount of links to your website will significantly increase your traffic and improve your visibility in the search engines.

Create a Twitter account: The name of the Twitter account should match the name of your startup business/domain name. Once you have set up your Twitter account, you should link it from your website and from Twitter to your website.

Add an Email subscription to your website: Allow people to sign up to receive Email alerts once you are ready to show them your offerings. You don’t need to have anything more complex than a simple Email sign-up form on your website.

Choose a logo: You can design the logo yourself or make a contest of it among your friends, family members, and colleagues. You will have the perfect logo before you know it.

Create a Facebook business page: This is also known as a fan page. Remember that it is most important to get your message out there. You should also include a simple description of your startup business, which you will link back to your website.

Start to build contacts in Facebook: You should organize your contacts into groups. This will become very valuable once your business has been built up. This is valuable because it will increase traffic to your website.

Start a blog: Use a quality blog tool that works well with search engine optimization and that you are able to customize (such as WordPress.org). WordPress.org should not be confused with WordPress.com. You are not able to fully optimize your blog if it is on WordPress.com.

Find bloggers who are writing on your topic area: You should subscribe to their feed and read what they have to say on a regular basis. Post valuable comments and join in on the conversation. This has a twofold advantage. First, if you get involved with discussions on subjects in your area of expertise, you are positioning yourself as a subject matter expert and thus, building credibility. Second, you will increase the traffic to your site.

Set up Google Alerts: You should do this for your business’ name and industry term. It is important to find a good balance for your industry term so that you are not inundated with alerts that you will end up ignoring. This will take some honing and editing effort but it will definitely be worth it. You set up Google alerts so that you can find out what people are saying about you and your business.

Identify your closest competitors: Of those competitors who you have identified, choose the competitors whom you think are the most marketing savvy. The metrics that you can use are a website grade above 90 (you can go to http://websitegrader.com and obtain a grade for you website also), their blog, website, Twitter, etc. These are the competitors who you are going to start tracking. You should add their names and websites to your Google Alerts. You track your competitors to ensure that they don’t have an edge over you and thus can build your uniqueness.

Update your LinkedIn profile: Mention your new startup business in your LinkedIn profile and add a link to your website. You can join groups in your areas of interest and participate in discussions. You can connect your LinkedIn profile with the other social media networks (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc.)

Make use of the Twitter search feature: This tool helps you to find high-impact Twitter users in your specific industry. You should start to follow them. You need to start building relationships through your Twitter network. Be very specific and particular about with whom you choose to connect.

Get some analytics: You can install analytics software, such as Google Analytics, so that you are able to watch your website traffic. You will be able to tell where it originated, how it is growing, which keywords and key phrases are being used to search for you, and what content they are looking at.

If you follow these simple steps, you will have laid the foundation for a long and successful professional existence.

    Michael,
Great tips.  I would also add that the e-mail subscription must be above fold, so readers will not miss it.  Also, the logo can be outsourced via elance.com or Guru.com. That shouldn't cost you more than $100,

  2. nice post. thanks.

Good tips!  I would add customizing your Twitter background after you've created your Twitter account.  This is a great way to better personalize your Twitter profile and provide readers with additional context about who you are and what you do.

There seems to be a new trend with websites built to purely promote new start-ups. Websites aimed at bringing in beta testers for developing ideas also offer start-ups access to consumers and investors as well as a passionate base of start-up enthusiasts from the website itself.
