The Physical Benefits of Social Media

Social Media for Physical Activity

Most people have a sedentary job, especially those who have online business interactions. Sitting at a desk all day can really take a toll on your physical well-being. It is important to exercise your body and your brain too.

There are effective ways to get into shape (and stay in shape)  even if you are desk-bound most of the time. It is very possible to be a huge success using social media for your business and staying in shape at the same time.

Set a goal for yourself

No matter what you do in life (or in business), you need to set goals for yourself in advance. Of course, it goes without saying that those goals should be realistic and attainable. When it comes to staying fit, the same concept should apply. You need to ask yourself what you want to achieve by reaching the goal that you have set for yourself. If you are not sure of the answer that that question, you need to stop and think before you go any further.

A useful tool that you may want to consider when it comes to identifying goals is a list of questions that asks questions such as

  • What is the first goal that you wish to achieve?
  • Which new physical activity would you like to try?
  • What will motivate you?
  • What is your biggest challenge when it comes to physical activity?
  • What do you consider an effective workout?

Once you have answered those questions, you will already have a little more direction than you did before and you can start to seek out other people with similar goals and similar interests. That will help you to stay motivated and to stay focused on the goals that you want to achieve. In order to keep you on track, there are several social media websites that you can use, such as FitLink, which has an optional button that is labeled “Stay Motivated.” You can also involve your online connections to support you on your way to getting into shape. Another effective tool is Daily Burn, which allows you to connect with other people who are in the same situation that you are in. If you connect on Daily Burn, you will have a great deal of support and motivation from others.

Keep a journal of your progress

There are several websites that can help you to keep track of the progress that you are making with your fitness strategy. DailyMile is one that you should check out. It allows you to enter all of your activities into the tool and it breaks your activities down by time increments of your choosing (daily, weekly, monthly, etc). Additionally, it allows you to track the progress of other people for added motivation. Tracking your progress is very important because it gives you a sense of responsibility for what you are doing and it makes you feel that you are answering to someone (even if that someone is actually you). You might also want to check in with Foursquare (a geolocation tool that allows other people to know where you are). If people see that you are checking into places like the gym on a consistent basis, it is bound to motivate them also.

Involve other people

Whether you are in an office setting with many other people or you are by yourself at a desk, your attitude about staying fit will make all of the difference to your success at achieving your goals. You will be surprised at how simple it is to convince other people to jump on the fitness bandwagon with you. Everyone feels and looks better when they are in better shape. It is an easy sell. Twitter is a great tool to use for this purpose also. You can create a hashtag specifically for your fitness campaign. Other people will definitely want to be a part of it. That way, you can support each other and track each other’s progress easily.

Conclusion

Now it is the end of the day and you have left work behind (both mentally and physically). It is time to do something for you. You should leave all of the electronic equipment behind and get real exercise. You can take the opportunity to walk up stairs, park a longer distance from the building, breathe deeply, and say to “no” to foods that you know aren’t good for your fitness progress and ones that you can live without. You know that you will feel better because of it. Stick to your promise to yourself about getting in shape. It will all be worth it in the end. Leave the Emails and the computer programs behind for a little while. After your workout, take a hot bath, maybe drink some wine, and be proud of the fact that you chose to put yourself first.

Discussion: The Physical Benefits of Social Media

I agree with Michael in exercising the brain with Social Media. This tool can help you to connect with long lost high school and college friends, it aides in following other people’s lives to converse and share what they are engage in to perhaps help you to land your next job. Social media can enable various groups of people to interact all at the same time to listen to other people’s opinions so that various viewpoints are shared and respected.

If used in a positive way, social media can have many invaluable benefits in different facets of people’s lives.
