How to Establish Credibility in Business

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

There are many different ways to establish credibility in business, whether you are a new business owner or your credibility has been negatively affected by something and must be rebuilt.

Many possible approaches to establishing or building credibility

Credibility in business is an essential building block and a critical part of the foundation of your brand and of your business. Not only do you need to have high (even untouchable) credibility for your business and for you as the business owner but your credibility also affects other people’s business reputations as well. If you do business with someone and you don’t end up being credible, others may view that person negatively.

If you are credible, other people will consider you trustworthy and they will trust that whatever you are offering them (selling them) will be worthwhile and of great value. That credibility will also motivate them to recommend your products and/or services to other people.

It is important to remember that interacting with people is one thing but getting them to view you as credible and trustworthy may take a lot more time and a lot more effort on your part. Just like anything worthwhile, you must nurture the relationship until it is solid and enduring. All relationships that are worth having must be cared for with love and patience.

Trust is at the heart of the relationship

Whether you are at the very beginning of a business relationship or you have been in that particular relationship for a long time, the fact is that you must have trust between you and the other person. Without trust, the foundation of the relationship will not be able to withstand anything because it will not be solid enough.

When it comes to trust between you and the other person, it is important to build that trust as early on as possible. Once you have done that, you can keep building on that and your relationship will have a good chance of flourishing. Not only will you share a solid relationship with the other person but there is also a really good chance that the other person will become loyal to you and to your brand. That is exactly what you want to happen.

You may be wondering how you go about establishing credibility and trust with the other person.

  • Allow the other person to get to know you and your brand: The best way to get started is to consistently (and as frequently as possible) share valuable content that your target audience will find valuable, educational, and compelling. You want them to be able to take that information and apply it to their business for successful results. Social media can help a great deal with this (in addition to posting content in other valuable places, such as in business directories, newsletters, etc.).

Consistency is really key and is understood that your content must be top-quality and exciting. Your message should also come through clearly but it should never be promotional. The purpose of your content is to provide valuable information, not to give anyone a hard sell.

  • Don’t deviate from your chosen path: Using your voice and telling your target audience about your brand is essential but it is often very tempting and very easy to stray from the path that you have chosen for your brand. You should try not to do that. In addition to building credibility, you are also using your voice and your perspective to build a connection between you and the other person. You will not be able to do that if you deviate from your chosen path.

  • Use your experience to build your credibility: There are a few things that will help you to build your credibility. One of them is by allowing other people to know what you have done and how well you have done for others. That comes in the form of testimonials.

One of your established goals is to get other people to become loyal to you and your brand and to let other people know how valuable your offerings are. Unlike taking that approach on a personal level, when it comes to business, it is perfectly appropriate to allow other people to communicate about how amazing you are and about how much you can help others. Just remember not to say any of those things yourself. You are the other person who can’t do that.

  • Share your experiences with others:  Having a great deal of knowledge is extremely important but the true gift is being able to share that knowledge with others. If you are able to give other people the benefit of your knowledge and experience, you will be giving them something invaluable. That is an important part of your successfully establishing the relationship. Building that foundation will carry you very far with the other person.

  • Be genuine: Even though it is important to learn from other people’s styles, knowledge, and expertise, it is equally important for you to establish your own voice and your own style. Those are what make you and your brand memorable. There may be times in which you have a difficult time finding your voice. Don’t give up because it will eventually come to you. It always does.

  • Highlight your uniqueness: Any business person who believes that there is no competition out there is fooling him- or herself. Everyone has competitors who do exactly what they do. Their approach may be different but their results will be the same. You may be able to offer a product or service that is a little different than someone else’s product or service but what will really stand out is how you approach the relationship and how you make the other person feel. You need to convince the other person why he or she should choose you over anyone else. The connection that you establish will be emotional and that will convince the other person that you are his or her number one choice.

  • Always give it your all and then some: No matter what, you must always give valuable information to others. That standard must be maintained consistently. That is another really good way to build your credibility with the other person. It is that consistently excellent information that will make the other person remember you and want to eventually buy from you.

  • Make the other person’s problems your first priority: If you can show the other person that not only is he or she your first priority but that you also have the ability to solve whatever problem(s) he or she is experiencing, you will be golden. That person will trust you after that and you will be top of mind whenever that person needs what you are selling.

Conclusion

Establishing your professional credibility is critical to your business/brand’s success. Without credibility, people will not take you seriously and you won’t get anywhere. You establish your credibility in several different ways and it will take some effort and tender loving care (TLC) on your part. Remember to always communicate effectively with the other person, which is critical. All of the efforts that you make will be totally worth it in the end.
