It is undeniable that Twitter possesses a great deal of marketing potential for your business. Of course, it is essential that you tap into Twitter’s potential so that you can leverage it to the max for your particular business.

The appeal of Twitter

Twitter is appealing for many different reasons. When you first start to interact through Twitter, you may think that the 140-character maximum for each tweet is extremely limiting and that it really prevents you from communicating the way that you would like to communicate in one message. However, once you have gotten used to tweeting it for a little while, you will most likely begin to appreciate the fact that the 140-character maximum forces you to be clear, concise, and spot on with each of your tweets. Believe me, other people definitely appreciate it too. There are many people with whom you may wish to interact and really get to know them in the professional sense. Millions upon millions of people are connected to Twitter. That means that your potential to have them as members of your target audience is astronomical. They are waiting for you. All you  have to do is go after those relationships.

Once you have started to leverage Twitter for your business (of course, it goes without saying that you will take a while and have to do a lot of hard work), you will go through a long process of building relationships with many different people. Once you feel that those relationships are solid and mutually beneficial, you will move toward converting at least some of the people with whom you have built relationships to clients. It is important to stop here and remember that you should never, ever be giving anyone the “hard sell.” However, that doesn’t mean that educating the other person about all that you have to offer should never be discussed. It most certainly should be discussed. How else will the other person come to  understand how valuable your offerings are for them and how well you will be able to solve their problem(s).

Presenting the most effective Twitter marketing campaign possible

There is no doubt that you have built an effective and exciting social media marketing campaign, which will take you very far on your quest to increase revenue and bring your business to the next level. Once everything with your marketing campaign is in perfect order, it will be time to increase your list of followers through top-shelf content that will touch your followers and compel them to continually interact with you and to acquire a hunger to read more and more of what you are sharing with them. With all of that in mind; however, it is very important for you to be aware of the fact that in addition to your online interactions, which are undoubtedly extremely important and extremely productive, you should also make a concerted effort to build Twitter followers offline. There are a large number of people with whom you should interact and the relationships that you build with them will be extremely valuable and will stand the test of time in many cases.

You may wish to consider the following offline tactics in your attempt to acquire new, exciting relationships.

  • Make sure that your Twitter information is on all of your marketing materials: “Everything” means everything. It doesn’t matter how many different types of marketing materials you have created to pass out to people. Every single one should have your Twitter information on it. Your goal is to make other people extremely familiar with that information.

  • Make sure that your Twitter information is on your business card: Most likely, you still hand out your business card (when appropriate) whenever you meet someone in person. Your Twitter information must be on there. If it is, the other person will try it out and in many cases, he or she will become a follower.

  • Offer incentives to people who follow you: This is a great way to acquire followers and it is also a great and extremely effective way to build meaningful relationships. Ironically, it is so simple yet so effective.

  • Include Twitter in all of your direct-mail marketing materials: Although the technological, electronic age is definitely upon us, you should still use your direct-mail campaign to share your Twitter information with your new “friends.” You will begin to see that it is an effective approach.

  • Take advantage of the opportunity to promote your Twitter profile at networking events: If you happen to be a person who understands the importance and the value of networking, you should try to take advantage of those meetings to push your Twitter profile to the forefront. Before you know it, other people will be doing the same thing. When it comes to meetings, if the opportunity presents itself, you may wish to consider giving some sort of presentation at one or more meetings. It is a great way to gain followers.

Conclusion

It is critical that you understand the importance and effectiveness of interacting offline to gain online Twitter followers. Of course, that doesn’t mean that you should abandon your online efforts. It only means that you should enhance those efforts and enrich them by doing both. When it comes to building relationships, the first impression that you make (whether it is online or offline) will carry you very far and will be a big contributor to gaining followers and in forging lasting relationships.

Good question! One of the things we do is we make sure that we have posters or flyers with our Twitter account indicated on it when we’re at events. This way, if people are interested in getting in touch with us online, they can easily do it on Twitter if they prefer. For restaurants or stores, I’ve seen this as an effective strategy. I believe it’s important to also have an offline strategy in mind to gain Twitter followers.

Great article! You advice to be sure you twitter info is on all your marketing collateral is important, you’d be surprised how often this is overlooked.

Also don’t forget to tweet out your activities, blog pots, updates, etc. Use tools like dlvr.it and hootsuite.com. Dormant social media is a kiss of death.

Tweet in a way that you have some sort of ‘call to action’ in the tweet, even if it’s subtle.

Don’t forget to add a URL to you post or website, use a URL shortener to save space.

For example a realtor may tweet out “There are 22 open houses in [neighborhood] do you know where they are? [short URL] #[neighborhood]RealEstate or #[neighborhood]OpenHouse”

This will encourage folks to click on you link.

Don’t forget the twitter badge on the virtual business card used by everyone in the organization (email signatures)!
