Networking online for your business is a skill that needs to be developed and practiced all of the time. The survival of your business depends on it.

Of course, online networking is far more involved than merely keeping track of your business contacts whom you have connected with through in-person networking events. If your business is not online, you will be viewed as out of date.

The beauty of online networking is that you can do it from anywhere. You don’t need to go any further than your desk at home. You don’t even have to shower and get dressed. You can easily connect with your business prospects as well as the people who are a part of your online communities.

It is extremely important to have complete profiles on all of the social media channels in which you are involved. Your complete profile(s) is how people get to know you enough to figure out if they want to pursue a deeper relationship with you.

Not only is online networking essential for your existing business but it is also the key to new business. Thinking about it in basic terms, if you network online, you are making excellent use of professional connections; you are going to the next level, which is expanding the relationship by getting those people to connect you with other people in their communities whom you don’t know yet.

There is an understanding within the boundaries of online networking that one hand washes the other when it comes to introductions to new people. You will introduce your contacts to people in your communities who want to connect with them and who were never presented with the opportunity before. In return, they will introduce you to business people with whom they have a relationship.

Online networking is of vital importance, is easy to accomplish, and is highly effective if you know where to look and which rules to follow. The following are some basic concepts that you should make sure are a part of your online presence.

  • Online presence: Make sure that you have a solid online presence, such as a website. Without an online presence, people will not be able to find you and will not be able to see what you have to offer.
  • Begin with what you already know: Your business and your industry should be easy for you to discuss. It is your expertise. Make sure that you keep very careful track of names, addresses, phone numbers, fax numbers, and any notes that you feel might be important for the individual and his or her business. If the person has a name that is not gender specific, make sure to include the gender of the person in your notes.
  • Use professional associations as links: Absolutely everyone professional association has a website. You need to share your professional affiliations with other people in your communities. An easy way to do this is to provide links to the associations in your content. Additionally, if you find a resource that offers you information that you find valuable, share it with others. Continue to share as much good information as possible.
  • Find groups online in your niche: Join online groups in your areas of interest and promote discussions. You can also ask questions, which will encourage other people to respond to you.
  • Get the most out of your online contacts: After you have developed online relationships, really get to know those people by engaging them. Try to figure out how you can help each other, whether that means exchanging information, connecting each other with secondary contacts, or enticing each other to buy products and/or services being offered.
  • Create a memorable first impressions: Building relationships (online and in person) is all about trust and credibility. The first impression that a person is left with will stay with them throughout time. Make sure that the impression of you that stays with them is positive and extremely special.

Summary

It takes a great deal of effort to develop online relationships. Always remember to put the needs of the other person before your own. You must constantly try to give them what they need and want and hopefully, they will do the same for you.

  1. The world wide web has been around for some time now. It's only in the last few years that if you use for connecting either for business or social reasons has gained popularity. Of course, most recently the term 'social media' has become at the forefront.  Like most new trendy things,  availability of relevant and useful information to ensure productive use of social media has also been cluttered with 'hype'.

I have found your articles and specific recommendations made by you avoid of the clutter. You provide good, solid, practical and applicable information that can be put to use right away.

Our Business Coaching services are unique, in that we also provide Support Services to implement the recommendations we make in our Action Plan which is the starting point of all our engagements.
