You may be a marvelous writer. Your content may be full of descriptive, beautiful language that paints a vivid picture for anyone who reads it. The grammar may be sound and put together amazingly. However, do you use the words that ensure that it will be read?

The science behind your readers not reading your content

Whether you realize it or not, there are reasons behind your content that either compel your readers to read what you have shared or walk away from your content and move on to someone else’s content. First of all, it is important to bear in mind that you have three seconds to engage the reader, which doesn’t allow you to get past much more than your headline. If you can grab the reader in that amount of time, you have a shot at their wanting to read more (hopefully the entire piece of content).

Loyal fans and new readers alike, nobody will be willing to stick with you if your content doesn’t hold any interest for them. If you want to know how you can keep them interested, you need to understand exactly which words to use that will produce that result, over and over again. The truth is that some words are much more effective and command much more power than others. Of course, your words all have the same goal: to get your readers to take some sort of action in your direction. That action could be clicking on a link, filling a form, requesting a white paper, etc. All of that is for the purpose of building a relationship.

It is time for you to understand what the effective words are so that you can start to use them in your content and produce the results that you are seeking.

  • Use the word, “You”: When you are writing content (as a matter of fact, this applies to everything that you do professionally), you must be driven by the marketing concept of WIIFM (What’s In It For Me?). In other words,  no matter how clever you are and no matter how wonderful your brand and your offerings are, if you are not able to solve the other person’s problem(s), you won’t get very far. First of all, you must make the other person want to share a relationship with you. That means that you need to build trust and you need to be credible in their eyes. Once you have achieved that, you will start to build a meaningful relationship that will hopefully endure. You can make a tremendous difference with  your content, depending on how you approach it.

  • Use the other person’s name: Customizing your content to whatever extent you can will be very powerful for you and it can achieve extremely positive results. If you have the opportunity to customize your content to the extent that you can speak only to that particular person, take full advantage of it. It will take you very far with that person. The point is that you are trying to establish an emotional connection with the other person and using the person’s name is a wonderful way to go about doing that. You can take the person’s name from your list(s) and you may be surprised at what positive results you achieve by doing that.

  • Use the word “because” and follow it up with an explanation: The fact is that things happen. They happen in business and they happen in life. Although you have to accept that fact, the point is that there is an explanation or a reason behind whatever happens. It is your job to be able to explain it to the satisfaction of the other person. If you can do that, the person to whom you are explaining what happened will respect you and that person will start to trust you. That is one of the most fundamental yet one of the most critical concepts when it comes to building relationships. If you are able to do that, you will successfully build trust and you will be credible in the other person’s eyes.

  • Use the word “if”: If is an effective word because it suggests the possibility for something better. It may be this way in reality but there is a distinct possibility that your situation will improve. Having hope is an amazing thing and it is what drives all people and all businesses.

  • Use the word “how”: Okay, you have planted the seed in the mind of your reader that there is a world of numerous possibilities out there and the sky’s the limit. However, now you are offering the next step to the person. You are offering to teach that person how to reach out and grab those possibilities. Basically, you are giving that person the tools to able to accomplish all sorts of things for his or her business.

  • Use the word “easy”: That is a powerful word because if given the choice, all human beings would choose easy over difficult. Wouldn’t you? If someone can get away with doing less work but still achieving the same positive result, he or she would never do it any other way.

Conclusion

The words that are mentioned here should help you a great deal and if you can find a way to effectively incorporate them into your content, you will begin to see positive results. Always keep in mind that you must establish and maintain that emotional connection with your readers. It is critical to your success. Remember how important it is for your business to make sure that your content is continually fresh and new so that you retain the interest of your readers at all times. Also remember to choose words that are comfortable for your readers, choose words that are customized for your target audience, ensure that all of your words are relevant, and make sure that your content is error-free.
