What Are the Objectives of Your Blog

blogging
Print Friendly, PDF & Email

If you have a blog, you are doing it with an end result in mind. All blogs need goals. Without goals, you won’t accomplish anything at all. Not only do you need goals but you must quantify them.

As a blogger, your mindset needs to be very specific. If your goal is to make money (your immediate goal, not your ultimate goal), it is not really a goal. It is what results from achieving other goals. Remember that you need to be able to set metrics to your goals and you can’t really set metrics to making money. There are goals, however, that you can set that are quantitative and achievable.

  • Reaching others: One of your goals is to reach a specific number of Email subscribers, RSS feed subscribers, high rankings in the search engines, indexed backlinks, unique visitors (per month), and Twitter followers. Not one of the goals that were just mentioned have anything to do with earning money. When you only focus on making money, you lose your focus on how you actually have to go about making money.

On the other hand, when your focus is on achieving those other goals, the increase in revenue will automatically follow. Certainly, you hear people speaking about how to monetize your blog. The road to making that happen is not always simple and always involves a great deal of hard work. After you have figured out your goals, you can put a plan in place to achieve those goals. You need to figure out how to reach the people in your target list and you need to figure out how to keep them interested after you have reached them.

  • Reaching your goals in a timely manner: If you don’t set a deadline for your goals, you won’t accomplish anything. The longer you let time pass by, the less urgent your goals will become. Deadlines force you to work hard in a short space of time and to succeed in that timeframe. The possibility that you might not achieve that goal makes your success at achieving it so much more rewarding. There will be goals that you won’t achieve. In fact, if you achieve every goal that you set for yourself, you are most likely not aiming high enough. Make sure that you set the bar high enough to really accomplish important things.

When thinking about your blogging goals, remember to

  • Set goals with measurable quantities
  • Tie deadlines to your goals
  • Consider the possibility that you won’t achieve every goal
  • Think positively and try not to consider failure as an option

When thinking about goal setting, it isn’t enough to merely set them. You should also have a plan established that tells you exactly how you are going to achieve those goals and which tools you are going to use to accomplish that. Make sure that all of your goals are realistic and achievable. A goal can never be something that you have already accomplished. That would be too easy. The have to be goals that you work toward (and work hard) to achieve so that you are able to bring your business to the next level.

Conclusion

You have so many things that you want to accomplish for your blog. You want to build relationships with new online connections and you want to strengthen relationships with existing connections. You want to offer informative, helpful, educational content to people who want to read what you have to say. You want to continue to generate more and more traffic. Your ultimate goal, of course, is to become more and more successful through your blog and how effectively it touches other people. Try to work on your blogging goals consistently and persistently. Before you know it, your goals will be accomplished and you will be setting new and more challenging goals.

I have a couple of blogs. One is for my artwork and the other is for my business. Right now I am very active on my business blog. I have a few of purposes. One is to share my experience as an entrepreneur, the ups and downs, ins and outs. The second to support and give other business women more exposure through " Interviews with Magnetic Business Women." and finally of course to attract people who might be interested in what I have to offer.

Interesting question. I have a blog in conjunction with my website. My purpose with the blog is to offer interesting ideas and comments on a regular periodic basis that will be of potential use to my readership. In return, I derive an increase in traffic to my site from tese blog posts.

When my book went on Amazon, very much in an idle moment, I started a discussion, on Amazon, on historical fiction. Very much to my surprise people still post to it. If I could do that somewhere else, with more purpose and intent I would.

I agree with you. That is why I haven't started to blog. I really need to set one up and get my platform going, but as you said, a blog needs a goal and I'm at a loss as to how to get that angle. I just don't know what I want to write about.

The objective of my blog is to pass on my own knowledge and experience of years of journalism and freelance writing. I don't feel that there has to be an end result in mind. Blogs tend to be ongoing and are usually informative, entertaining or both. At some point I may turn my blog in to a book, but at the moment I just enjoy helping others who are just starting out on their freelancing career.

I agree you need goals, but you also need readers, which raises the question, how do you get them? If you are very famous, probably all you have to do is announce the fact you have a blog, but that only works for a very few. Then there is the issue, besides goals you have to quantify them. I am not quite sure what that means. Do you mean the goal must be quantified, or the success rate of achieving it, e.g. how many readers, etc?

I have started a blog with the purpose of increasing interest in scientific theory, and also in promoting an ebook I self-published at Amazon. My approach here was to focus on putting the blog where I thought more people with a scientific interest might view it (in this case, The Royal Society for Chemistry (London), of which I am a member) and I have managed to get it as a featured blog, which I hope is some achievement, but I still have no idea whether I am achieving my goals or not. I think quantification here is extremely difficult, and it may be that you have to keep going for a long time to know whether or not it is a success. If that is the case, I think it is important to focus on quality posts, and not be too concerned with immediate quantification. What do others think?

I’m new at this and trying to balance all the writing and time. My blogging goals are: to stimulate civil, but interesting and satirical at times, on important national, state, and local issues; promote conversations on my radio program where I have candid conversations with Members Of Congress, State and Local elected officials, public policy experts of all kinds, authors, and I use as a forum for non-profits of all kinds; and to introduce my political and social commentary, fiction, poetry, and song lyrics. My blog is REFLECTIONS OF THE LAST DINOSAUR or maybe just a humble hobbit, perhaps both, on life, liberty, and the honest search for truth and justice. I may be slow responding but I always will. Thanks for having me.

Amidst a sea of first rate, electric motor homes, I pitched my tent a few years back around a warm-hearted blog. There's just nothing better than gathering around a campfire with friends to toast life's events into a chocolaty smore of gooey, marshmallow memories. For a rib tickling break in your day, gather with friends around the warming embers of the Perk and Pleasantry blog.

Great topic, Michael. Every blog should have objectives.

I will share my blog goals, and I hope others will do so too. Mine are simply to:
    1. Establish credibility.
    2. Help prospective clients learn more about the marketing methodologies I use so they can a) do it themselves, or b) hire me and my team.

    I would love feedback!

My objective is simple-to get people to know me. The setting-the feel-the rhythm of my Christmas story geared to adults entitled, "The Reindeer Keeper" was greatly influenced by my growing up in the country where there were 4 houses in a row full of relatives. My cousins and I had fields, pastures, barns, a creek, and an old chicken coop turned into a clubhouse in which to play and use our imaginations-and that is what my blog is about. So much of the character and my love for that place played a subliminal role in how I wrote this heatwarming story. If people understand where I am coming from, I feel they are more likely to follow where I take them again-and again.

I definitely agree that blogs need goals, such as "attract traffic" or "get more visitors to become clients." I even suggest that each post be geared to one's objective. Therefore you may not want to put a post about how you made a really dumb mistake when you want to gain credibility with prospects and clients.

That said, it's often hard to draw a line. Some posts that I thought were a little too personal or off the wall have drawn a great response from my readers. As a service provider you want to come across as professional … but also as a three-dimensional person.

I have 3 objectives: To educate, entertain and enlighten. Sounds pretentious even to me. But let me explain

    1) When I say educate, I include myself. I'm always trying to find ways to make life; fun, easy and abundant.

    2) I believe you can't bore anyone into learning anything worthwhile. So I use cartoons and other forms of humor to entertain the reader and of course myself.

    3) The enlighten part, well that's a work in progress. I'm still under construction.

My blog is called…How To Seduce Life (after my book of the same name of course)

Good question. Originally I think it started as a simple writing exercise…an extension of my daily practice. I hoped a coherent theme would arise around which I might build a solid readership. Now some 2-3 years into HT u am disappointed the theme has not appeared though I appreciate the opportunity to work with the platform.

Hi Carolyn. My purpose originally was to share information and ultimately get my name a little more widely known. I've just started offering blog interviews and that's helped enormously with my content (plus it's great fun). I do find that the more I blog the more hits I get. I'm on Twitter and Facebook (to which my blog is linked) but they're only a fraction of the visitors, others including Google (other good websites are available :)) searches etc. I think it's the old 'not what you know but who you know' and if you do little, you get little in return. My blog speaks for itself. We all need to better educate ourselves and become better informed of the abuses perpetrated on our elders. We will all be there someday and only when we are ourselves educated on this national tragedy will we be able to prevent it from happening to our loved ones.

I blog . My purposes are many, but gaining credibility and visibility are the main objectives.

I blog for parents: I hope we can share ideas and tips to help kids learn and thrive in the few years that they spend in elementary classrooms. I write middle-grade fiction for ages 8-12; parents buy my books.

I blog for teachers: It’s obvious that I have a special place in my heart for first-year teachers and specials teachers.

I also produce resources for teaching and learning multiplication, which are available through Amazon.com.

    Cheers!

I started a blog for each of my E-books (on Amazon Kindle). I wanted people to be able to find out more about the books, and my Amazon author page links to my blogs. On the blogs I've put extracts from various chapters. One of my books is a fantasy novel for young adults, and for this I've added illustrations to enhance it. Because I do a lot of photography I've started a photo blog as well. And on top of this I'm writing an ongoing story for children with photos and illustrations! It's a good thing I'm retired! All the blogs are linked, so hopefully someone looking at my photo blog may click on the links to my book-blogs. I've had a 125 viewings on my children's story in the first week of June. Unfortunately I still haven't upped my book sales – but I live in hope!

We both love food (obviously for me) and photography, my sister also likes to write. We had been talking about doing this blog for many years and finally we just did it.

To write a how-to book on creating long documents in MS Word. Each post is a tip, part of a larger map. Eventually, this will turn into a workshop as well, targeted at people who regularly write long reports, business proposals and other documents. Benefit: to take less time formatting by automating the formatting, so the document takes less time to write overall.

Also: to share technology insights that can help people generally work better with their computers.
