To differentiate your business, and establish yourself as a expert in a niche, it is good to have the name reflect it. "Health Communicators," "Pharmaceutical Communications" "Ecommerce Copywriting"- these are also SEO-friendly names. Always good to come up higher in the search rankings. I believe explaining what you do is better than being clever, and running the risk of leaving the potential customer guessing.

This is good advice, too, Nan, but only if you specialize. Those of us who write across industries have a different challenge differentiating our services.

I agree! The choice of naming the business is critical - your business name is the heart of your brand and connects consumers to your business by creating a sense of peace-of-mind and evoking positive emotions. The problem for most small business owners is finding a name that is creative, meaningful, not already trademarked, and available as a website domain name.

With Internet Marketing it is important that your great business name also be one you can register as your Domain (i.e. be available) - and that the name is keyword rich in order to get traffic to your website

Thanks for posting this. When I started my business, I thought using my name -- Starks Communications -- was the way to go. If I had to choose again, I might choose something more descriptive and fun -- I've seen writing businesses call themselves Wordsmiths, Inc., Let Me Say It For You, Ghostwriters in the Sky, etc. All fun, creative and attention-getting. Again, good food for thought in this piece.

These are all good points to consider when deciding on a business name. When I changed my business focus, I changed my business name. It was a good move. When I started my first blog, I used my business name, Home Office Life. Then I changed my blog name to Working Naked. For corporate reasons. my business is still called Home Office LIfe (companies are more comfortable with a conservative name) but I love spreading the word about Working Naked and I definitely get media attention and social media attention with it.
