Getting Qualified Twitter Followers

When it comes to Twitter, your main concern for you is how to increase the number of followers over what you have already. However, it isn’t enough to merely acquire followers. You need to acquire high-quality followers.

Quality over quantity

Before you start on your strategic social media campaign, you need to identify which specific followers you want to follow you on Twitter. The higher the quality of your followers, the higher the quality of your social media relationships will be. If your content is excellent but the wrong people are following you and reading it, it won’t go very far.

Make sure that you have a complete profile

An extremely easy way to establish credibility is to complete your Twitter profile. The credibility plays into it because your completed profile makes others understand that you know what you are talking about. Remember to include a current photograph of yourself as part of your profile. The photo is very important because it gives you a human quality—a quality that other people can relate to. It is critical for you to complete your entire profile. Another very important part of your profile is your biography. People not only need to understand who you are and what you are doing now, they also need to understand where you come from and how you got to where you are now.

Introduce yourself

An easy and effective way to establish connections on Twitter is to simply introduce yourself to people with whom you wish to connect. Try to interact with them as much as you can and you will see that before you know it, your relationship will be solid.

Get your social media house in order

Organization is key. It is important for you to keep track of all logins, passwords, etc. It is an excellent idea for you to create a folder in your inbox so that you can save all of your Twitter account information in one convenient place.

Determine who you want to follow you

If you are having a difficult time in determining who you want to follow you, there are lists that can help you. There are some questions that you need to answer before you start to build your list of followers. First of all, you need to decide what you want out of the relationships that you are establishing with your followers. How will those followers help you to get to the next step in your business? Twitter is an amazing tool for business. Make sure that you use it to its fullest potential. If, after you have answered those important questions, you still are having a difficult time of coming up with followers, you should get support from the various lists that are available to you.

Follow other people

If you have already established profiles on LinkedIn and Facebook, you should search for people with whom you already share a relationship on Twitter. If you are following people who you actually know in person, there is a great chance that they will follow you back. After that, you can expand your Twitter circle by following people whom you don’t know but who know people you are following on Twitter but who you also know in person. Another avenue is to follow people after you have met them face to face at an event.

Write quality content

Twitter has gotten a bad reputation at times. There is actually a simple reason for that. In the past, people have used Twitter to communicate all sorts of seemingly useless and insignificant information about themselves (such as what they had for breakfast, the fact that they are sitting outside and enjoying the sunshine, etc). Just as you are pursuing high-quality followers, you should make it a point to always write and publish only high-quality tweets. This is another part of your credibility. It will be far more interesting for you to tweet about other people and what they are doing than about yourself. Make sure that your tweets are always positive and intriguing. The more you promote other people through your tweets, the more they will promote you in return.

Continually add people to your lists

When you first started to get involved with Twitter, you should have started a list of followers, which you should constantly be adding to as you go along. You want to make other people feel that they are on your lists because you consider them important (they are worth having on your lists). You should also express gratitude to your followers every once in a while for the fact that they are following you.

Respond to other people’s tweets

The whole basis of Twitter is that it is an interactive tool. You need to make sure to continue to maintain an indefinite discussion with those who follow you and with those whom you follow. Also remember to retweet the tweets that you consider the most valuable. Everyone will appreciate it.

Integration

Make sure that you include your Twitter handle on all of your branding materials. This is, of course, assuming that you are using Twitter for business. This serves two purposes: 1. You will demonstrate how much you want to involve others in your business. 2. You will be showing everyone just how savvy your really are.

Conclusion

Twitter continues to be an extremely important social media tool for business. The quality of your Twitter followers and the quality of your tweets will contribute greatly to the success of your relationships online and to the ultimate success of your business.

    Hi Michael,
    All are great steps.
Each one helps you to maintain clarity into who you are and what you have to offer. Let people see you and what it is that you do and people can find you with greater ease. Those who resonate with you are attracted to you. That's the power of being clear at work, automatic targeted marketing.
    Thanks for sharing Michael!

I also find taking part in Follow Friday very helpful.  @ffhelper is a useful tool to help you keep track of your recommendations.  I also follow back those recommended to me by my followers.  It's a great way to get more targeted followers!

I thinks it's difficult for some people to follow a professional when that person is following immature media hype which has nothing to do with your or their profession..I would never follow someone who is following lets say..Charlie Sheen or Lindsay Lohan..It's one thing if you're not looking for professional followers but I guess some may have to wonder why they don't have "Qualified" followers. Interesting topic, thanks for posting!

Integration is a key point here, so I was glad to see you included that!  So many people have a great Twitter presence, and forget to include their handle on their business cards, in their email signatures, in press materials, on websites, on their Facebook pages, etc.  I've found that people will follow you if they know how!

I agree – you need to acquire high quality followers, that add to the conversation in an intelligent way. It's not enough to have dozens of followers – you have to amass a group that engages you in conversation, and sometimes even debate!

    Hi Michael,

    Great topic!

I agree that high numbers are great, however what's really important on Twitter (as in all social media), is *engagement* with Followers.

Asking them questions, answering their questions, having conversations, being oneself, having a low ratio of sales tweets, responding when people @ or DM us, and more.

If you wan't lots of followers on Twitter, first of all you'll have to be interesting. You should have tweets that give back to your followers to keep them interested and engaged to you and whoever you're representing. Then you'd have to be engaging and talk to your followers. Try and see what they're tweeting and respond accordingly, this gives your other followers a reason to tweet you and that way their followers will be interested in your conversation and will follow you too.
