When social media first became popular, its general concept was a paradigm between people (sociology) and technology. Public conversations made involvement from outside parties possible. Over time, the purpose of social media has changed.

What sociology is and how it relates to technology

Sociology is defined as “The science of human society.” In many, if not all cases, human roots, organizational skills and the development of society with regard to technology have been key attributes in the field of sociology. Technology introduces advancements and information that plays an important part in helping a society to achieve its objectives. No matter what those goals are, relationships are always at the heart of accomplishing them. In this day and age of advanced (and extremely sophisticated) technology, people seem to be making connections more easily and on a much broader scale. They are interacting in many different ways and in some cases, the interactions are extremely creative. Of course, the bottom line is that it always comes down to the human relationship.

	Sociology and human interaction

With the huge number of people who are involved nowadays with social networks, it is very interesting to note how they are influenced by each other in many different ways. Human beings need to network. It is one of the major sources of happiness and fulfillment and the more they interact (on many different levels), the more satisfied they are going to feel. When people engage in social networking, there is no doubt that they start to have a tremendous impact on each other and the discussions that come out of the networking experiences very often affect the decisions that they make in life and in business. It is very important for people to recognize and appreciate how much other people influence them and how much that enriches their own experience. It has been proven that conscious and subconscious behaviors dramatically increase when people are involved thorugh social networking. Because humans are emotionally dependent on each other, many people will share qualities, both positive and negative.

The success or failure of sociology and technology

It is important to understand that if sociology and its relationship to technology fails, the fault lies with the people. Technology is created and maintained by humans. If something goes wrong on the technical side, it is irrational to blame the technology itself. The responsibility always lies with the people. On the other side, the people are the ones who deserve the credit when everything works out well. For example, a huge amount of friends on Facebook, or dozens of followers on Twitter, requires maintenance to keep the interest of those advocates. No matter how technologically advanced your social media channels are, without human involvement, progress is not possible.

The popularity of social media and the reasons behind it

There are often times that one wonders how social media became so popular and why so many people have shown such an interest in it. First of all, it is critical to understand that human relationships are at the heart of social media’s success. By no means does this discount how important the technological aspect is. Without technology, there would be no social media to begin with. One of the biggest reasons for the success of social media is accessibility to people at incredible speeds. The interactivity of social media is what relates to human nature. The sociological characteristics of social media can be credited with its own progress. Human beings' influence on each other is a part of the phenomenon that is inevitable. People make choices in life (and the same applies to their interaction through social media) in large part due to what other people do and say.

Connecting on a very personal level

No matter what type of business you have, without relationships with other people, the part of your career that involves sales would be nothing short of mediocre at best. The way that any person gets to a point of successfully selling their products and/or services is by building trust and credibility. Interestingly, in many ways, social media has brought people together at a level unlike any other before. Social media, and the interactions that people have through it, allows many different emotions to be expressed and relationships to flourish due to the ease of interactions.

	Conclusion

Sociology plays a tremendous role in the success of social media. Technology can be viewed as an extremely sophisticated tool that makes things possible when it comes to social media and human beings. As time goes on, those tools change and new ways are introduced. It is very important to take advantage of whichever technological advances are being offered, as long as they make sense for your business. A devotion of time and energy toward working with new technologies will pay off in business in one way or another.

You post content on a regular basis and you are sensitive to what you can and cannot appropriately post online. With that in mind, you should share your knowledge with others who are not as aware of what to do.

Discretion and a refined approach

Some subjects and even the delivery of certain subjects are appropriate and acceptable when presented in certain ways and some have the potential of offending other people. Of course, first and foremost, always be polite. You should always try to understand how your words will be received. Sometimes, the inappropriate content is screamingly obvious and sometime it is more subtle and you need to sit and contemplate whether it is acceptable to share it with other people or not. The last thing that you want to do is offend others or violate some online etiquette rule (written or just commonly understood).

There is a common misconception that it is acceptable to post certain content through social media channels that is clearly not appropriate in any other medium. Well, it is actually not acceptable through social media channels either. Social media has given people the opportunity to hide behind what they regard as a protective shield. They feel that whatever they post is ok and that there will never be any repercussions from that sort of communication. It isn’t that the people who are posting such content are bad people who have no idea how to distinguish right from wrong. The issue is that the same social skills and finesse that apply to face-to-face interactions don’t necessarily apply in the same way to online interactions. The behavior is still being honed for online interactions and it may take a while longer until the behavior has been refined to its final version.

Social media unfortunately doesn’t come with an established set of written rules so the code of behavior is still being established. Because of the nature of social media and the way in which members of social networking communities interact and behave online, the relationships that the people share are bound to be different than face-to-face interactions are and the way in which people relate to each other in person is different than the way that they relate to each other online.

The age of communication

The age of communication is upon us and the young people of today (Generation Z—people born from the mid-1990s until now) must be educated and nurtured in an age when communication is very different than it ever was in the past. For older generations of people, behavior when it comes to socializing online isn’t difficult and a great deal of the behavioral decisions are driven by common sense. When it comes to online privacy settings for friends, family members, and colleagues, it is simple to know what and what not to share with certain people. The broad rule is that every piece of content with which you have a connection should be socially acceptable and there should be nothing in there that could hurt you in any way. With the younger generations, don’t assume that they will automatically understand what is and isn’t totally appropriate.

The way in which younger people communicate seems inappropriate at times (at best) and crass or even damaging (at worst). The problem with that type of communication is that it goes beyond the person who is actually doing the communicating and is considered a reflection on other people who are associated with that person (parents, friends, etc).

The reality of perception

We all create perceptions of ourselves (consciously or subconsciously) and whether those perceptions are true or not, they are definitely someone’s reality. Although there is an expectation that teenagers are still learning how to behave on their journey to maturity, it is important to teach them what is acceptable and what is not acceptable online and creating a negative perception may have long-lasting effects that they really shouldn’t have to be faced with.

Conclusion

Whether a code of ethics and etiquette is written down or merely understood, it is just as real. Everyone online has to play by the same rules and the education is a critical part of the success of online communications. The fact is that social media, social networking, and online interactions are here to stay. Everyone just needs to make sure that their approach to online communication is done in the best way possible and in a way that is never offensive or insulting. If you treat people politely and respectfully, they will react positively to you and will react favorably to what you are saying. Remember, you really do catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

When it comes to online interactions, just like any other interactions, your personality is a strong influence on your ability to be successful. Your personality, with all of its traits, is a huge influence on how others respond to you.

Connecting people

When it comes to business networking and introductions being made, some people will be more likely than others to effectively help other people to widen their circle of business connections. Your personality will determine whether you will be comfortable with introducing people to other people. If you are a reserved individual, chances are very good that you won’t have a desire to put yourself in the spotlight. By introducing one person in your online social circle to another person in your online social circle, you are making yourself the center of attention. That may not be something about which you are comfortable.

On the other hand, if you are an outgoing person, a person who lacks inhibitions, you will be much more inclined to connect people in your online communities with each other. In fact, connecting people can bring you a great deal of joy. Your deepest influence comes from who you are as a person, deep down inside. Your genes could be a much larger factor in your life than you know.

Social media: It satisfies many different types of people

Social media is extremely attractive to people with all sorts of different personalities for many different reasons. It gives outgoing people a much larger group of people to work with when it comes to successfully being the person who establishes connections for others. It makes them so happy to be in the middle of everything and, at the same time, to positively affect a change for others. The various online communities offer different benefits for different people.

Social media is also very attractive to people who are not as comfortable with being in the middle of everything. Social media gives them the opportunity to connect with people as much or as little as they wish to do so. They can go at a pace that is comfortable for them and, at the same time, they can still feel satisfied that they are making a solid contribution to other people.

One thing that is clear in all cases is that no matter how people use social media and social networking, who they are as people is an important part of it. It is scientifically understood that different genes affect different types of behavior. One thing that is certain is that people will continue to connect with each other and interact through online social communities. That means of communication is here to stay. Having a deep understanding of the psychology and the science behind it makes everything better.

Social media’s potential influence

There are so many different ways in which social media can influence people with their issues. Many of those issues can have genetics at their source. Let’s look at obesity as an example. In many cases, obesity is very influenced by heredity. From a psychological perspective, many people who battle a weight problem are able to overcome their issue with support from other people. That is where the social media aspect comes into play. If a person has a strong sense of online social community and shares relationships with other people who can empathize (or at least sympathize) with them, their end result will be affected in a positive way and they will feel better about themselves.

Conclusion

Whether genetics are being considered when it comes to personality traits or issues that are physical as well as psychological, social media comes into play and can have a positive influence on the outcome of the situation. It is very important to have an understanding of how strong a role heredity plays when it comes to people successfully making social media work for them. People will respond to you if you allow them to see who you really are and to forge common ground with them. At the same time, if you feel that your personality needs a little spicing up, there is nothing wrong with keeping things interesting by speaking about provocative subjects or, perhaps, by injecting some humor into your interactions with others.

Businesses create Facebook pages to attract more fans who will hopefully turn into customers and to also strengthen social media interactions. What should be included so that people like it and you achieve your goals?

When people see that an individual or business is successful, they want to understand why how. When people go on Facebook, they are given the opportunity to see what the business has to offer.

As a business owner, being social with your fans is critical to the relationships that you share with them as well as to the ultimate success of your business. Your business’s Facebook page is another solid way in which to communicate with your prospects and customers and goes a very long way in your campaign to continue to strengthen your relationships through continual interaction.

It is fair to say that the majority of Facebook pages are successful because of word of mouth. Once a prospect or current customer likes a business’s Facebook page, they will tell their friends, family and business associates about it. The importance lies not only in having the page online and available to other people so that they can read everything being offered but also with the interactive aspect of it.

Good reasons for liking your Facebook page

Businesses can offer a great deal through their Facebook page. These could be status updates on the company, special promotions that may be going on at any given time, or other valuable pieces of information that may be of interest to the prospects and customers that are not included on their business’s website.

Another positive aspect is that the business can promote discussions and interactions between both the business and its fans and among the fans themselves. It is like interactive customer service.

When people are considering investing in a business, they typically try to have all of the information that they possibly can before they decide to buy the products and/or services that the business is offering. The more information about the business that is available, the more inclined the person will be to like the page and to actually become a customer of that business.

Another method to attract people to your business is if they check out your Facebook presence and they see that other people like your Facebook page. From a sociological perspective, a large number of fans equals popularity and success so people tend to gravitate toward what is popular and to what other people are discussing. Facebook is an extremely effective social tool for this and it is growing all of the time.

Liking the page of a particular business does not in any way force the other person to have an obligation to that business. Generally, people shy away from forced commitments. The more interesting and educational information you have, the greater the number of people who will be attracted to it. It is all about content that attracts attention and people.

Conclusion

With all of the sophisticated technology that is available nowadays, particularly social media and how it affects people’s lives, it is critical for business owners that they continue to build stronger and stronger relationships with the people with whom they connect. Remember, it is extremely important for you to give your fans a very good reason to like your Facebook page and to spread the word around to others so that they can like it also.

There is a certain awkward feeling in everyone’s mind when they go to a business event. People have a fear that nothing will be gained from the meeting or that time is being wasted.

Meeting a person online is very different than meeting him or her offline. The person is not physically in front of you and you are not afforded some of the luxuries that are part of face-to-face interaction, such as being able to see the other person’s movements, body language, and facial expressions as you are speaking with him or her. Those elements of face-to-face interactions are all necessary so that you can decide whether building a relationship with that person will benefit both of you professionally.

When you start to build a business relationship with someone online and those in-person luxuries have been removed, you are able to put aside all judgments and move forward with the conversation, absorbing all of the information that you need to be able to build a meaningful and substantial relationship. When the relationship has an online basis, it is much easier to determine whether your professional relationship will be mutually beneficial. If after pursuing this online relationship, you decide that your relationship with that person will be valuable, it is now time to transition from the online relationship to the offline (or face-to-face) relationship.

As mentioned earlier, offline and online business relationships are very different from each other. The purpose of meeting one on one with a person in an offline relationship is to establish a feeling of trust between you and the other person and then to build upon that trust.

All relationships (business and personal) must have trust as one of the essential elements that make up the foundation of the relationship. Meeting with the person one on one makes it possible for each person to get to know the other on a more personal and human basis. The idea of meeting the other person face to face to build trust and to develop the relationship more deeply is very important; however, there is a catch, which is the psychology of the human mind.

People are uncomfortable when they first meet someone new, which stems from the fact that they do not have that trust built up in an offline relationship with the other person. This is why making connections and starting a relationship online is helpful when it comes to beginning the relationship process. When people make the decision to meet in person, they have things that they can discuss and are able to get right down to business because they have already gotten past the introductions and all of those awkward moments through their relationship online. Basically, the bottom line is that because of their online relationship, the technology used to create this new and hopefully long-term relationship has been used as an ice breaker. It is much easier and more beneficial for people to work together and gain from each other when their relationship is strong.

	Conclusion

Making connections online is a useful tool that should never go untapped by any business owner with dreams and aspirations of success.
